An oiled version of the IH popular N1, designed to enhance water resistance. Due to the nature of whipcord and its resistance to absorption, the heavy oiling increases the fabric’s weight from the standard 12oz to approximately 14oz. For this season’s models, IH has updated the oiling process in an effort to find a more eco-friendly method. Previously, they used fluorine in the process , a highly toxic chemical that poses serious environmental risks. Now, a fluorine-free coating replaces this hazardous substance with a double layer of oil. This achieves the same level of water repellency as before but results in a slightly waxier hand feel—making this the heftiest version of the N1 to date. 

The N1 deck jacket was first issued to US Navy servicemen in the early 1940s. Much copied in the years since, this military classic has evolved to become a true style icon in its own right. The Iron Heart take on the N1 remains pretty true to those original jackets—“if it ain't broke, don't fix it”—constructed with a highly durable whipcord outer shell and a high-density lining blended from sheep and alpaca wool. Of course, they have also given the original design a few innovative upgrades, most notably a hidden chino interlining to enhance wind resistance and a heavy-duty two-way zipper concealed beneath the traditional buttoned storm placket. This creates a formidable winter jacket, seamlessly blending authentic WW2-era styling with modern performance and functionality.

Fabric Focus

Care Guidelines

- Dry clean (with petroleum solvent) only
- Outer material can be spot cleaned by hand with warm water
- Do not machine wash or tumble dry
- No shrinkage expected when washed according to these guidelines

Do Not Iron

This oiled fabric will naturally develop creases and wrinkles with wear — a characteristic of the material which cannot be avoided. We do not recommend ironing or steaming the fabric, as excessive heat can damage the oil coating and cause discolouration.
